A great portrait shows more than the outward likeness of a person – it shows something of their soul and personality. People have so many moods, and their fleeting expressions are difficult to capture. Many people freeze up in front of a camera, and often photography subjects will put on a “fake smile” as soon as they walk in front of the lens. They offer the same pose and expression they used in grade school yearbook photographs. Getting beyond the obvious, helping the subject loosen up and show true emotions is the most difficult task of a portrait photographer.

In addition to getting the right expression and pose, there are many other factors to consider. Hair and makeup are important to every portrait. Clothing, settings, props, lighting and background all play a part in a portrait's success or failure.

“Capturing the highlights in the eyes is vital,” states Davis. “The eyes are the first place most people look when they see a photograph of a person, and the eyes have to show emotion and sparkle or the picture looks dead.”
